 On October 30, 1950, a small civil war erupted in the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico. As Puerto Rican soldiers of the 65th Regimental Combat Team fought under the US flag in the Kumchon-Yongdong area of Korea, thousands of miles away, a group of Nationalist rebels launched an insurrection to take back Puerto Rico from US dominion. Brothers were ordered to kill brothers in order to maintain control under a foreign flag.

 The Department of Justice released a report regarding the killing of Filiberto Ojeda Ríos by the FBI. In the report, the DOJ regards the assault on Ojeda in Puerto Rico as “a flawed decision and not the best option available.” However, the report found no “misconduct” with the FBI assault. "Incidents of this nature in any other jurisdiction under the American flag would be a major scandal,” according to Congressman José Serrano.

Others have blasted it as a colonial document, which stipulates how de-colonizing the territory should proceed. Regardless, at least we’re clear on the word ‘colony’ and the state of Puerto Rico. |
