One hundred producers could have made one hundred different movies of Hector Lavoe’s life, and they would all have received varying doses of cheers, jeers, rants and raves. But we’re not here to talk about what others did not do or could have done. Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, director Leon Ichaso and company are the first to step up to the plate in delivering a story about this musical icon to the big screen. We will use this page to archive some thoughts and dialogue the movie has generated within the community in New York and abroad.

It is difficult to imagine the curse of making a film based on a beloved icon such as Hector Lavoe. Most people who went to see him live, his friends, those who worked with him and those who profited from his career, are still around. So the risk in ‘disappointing’ people when interpreting a multidimensional, larger-than-life figure on such a rich medium as motion picture is inherent.

Hector Lavoe, unfortunately left us some time ago.  But the movie, "El Cantante," starring the very talented actor and singer Marc Anthony, is like seeing him again at his highest form.  The reality is that Marc Anthony personifies him with lucidity and interprets his songs as only he can do and like Hector Lavoe (“The King of Punctuality”) did — with a lot of flavor, happiness, passion, desperation and also pain.
